Letter to the Jewish Community of Fustāt (II)

This fragmentary Judeo-Arabic letter was sent from the Jewish community in Damascus, Syria, to their coreligionists in Fustāt (Old Cairo). The Damascene Jews speak of their ongoing financial and political hardships, including increased taxation that they faced and a prohibition against kosher slaughter. The capricious previous governor had been replaced, and the Jews hoped for better treatment from his replacement. These hopes were dashed when he sought to collect the taxes five months before they were due, despite the bribes that he had previously taken. They therefore request both financial and political help from the Jews of Fustāt.
