Bill of Sale (Catalonia, Spain)

This bill of sale was preserved in both Hebrew and Latin; the Latin is not included here. The document records a sale of land from a Jewish man to a Christian. The location of the land may correspond to modern-day El Cogul, an area very close to the Catalonian city of Lleida.

We have enacted this sale—I, Solomon ben Reuben, to Don Bonoso Balshin, as written above in Latin script—for 140 pieces of gold, of a portion of the field of Cogol, in the month of Iyyar, in the year 4836 to the creation of the world [1076 CE]. I agreed to sign it, by means of a legal act of acquisition from me, which they performed.

Nathan ben Solomon
